Ruling on rinsing the mouth whilst fasting, He tasted the food and swallowed it by mistake, Speaking to one’s fiancée over the phone when fasting | What is Permitted for a Fasting Person?

when fasting are you alowed to put water in your while making wudo

Praise be to Allaah.

The believer is enjoined to do wudoo’ properly. This was the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) who said: “Do wudoo’ properly, make water reach between the fingers and toes, and rinse the nose very thoroughly, except when you are fasting.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Sawm, 788; Abu Dawood, 142; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 631).

So he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) pointed out that we should avoid excessive rinsing of the mouth and nose when fasting, lest that lead to the thing which is forbidden, namely water getting into the throat whilst fasting. As for simply rinsing out the mouth whilst fasting, there is nothing wrong with that so long as the water does not enter the throat of the fasting person.

Hence it was narrated in a saheeh hadeeth that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab said: “I kissed (my wife) whilst I was fasting. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, today I did something grievous, I kissed whilst I was fasting.’ He said, ‘What do you think about rinsing your mouth whilst you are fasting?’ I said, ‘There is nothing wrong with it.’ He said, ‘Then what’s wrong?.’”

(Narrated by Abu Dawood, al-Sawm, 2037; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, no. 2089).

The commentator on this hadeeth said concerning the words, “What do you think about rinsing your mouth whilst you are fasting?”, This is a sign of brilliant understanding, for rinsing the mouth does not invalidate the fast and it is the first step towards drinking… And Allaah knows best.

My wife asked me to help her make iftaar, and whilst I was helping her I checked the food for salt, forgetting that I was fasting. Did I break my fast by doing that? Because I was doing something that was not obligatory upon me according to sharee’ah or according to custom?

Praise be to Allaah.

Praise be to Allaah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allaah.

There is nothing wrong with a fasting person tasting the food if he needs to, if he does that by testing it with the tip of his tongue, then he spits it out without swallowing anything, whether the one who is fasting is a man or a woman.

But if the fasting person forgets and swallows it by mistake, there is no sin on him, and he should complete his fast. This is because of the general meaning of the evidence which indicates that according to sharee’ah, the person who forgets is excused. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever forgets that he is fasting and eats or drinks something, let him complete his fast, for it is Allaah Who has fed him and given him to drink.” (Agreed upon. Al-Bukhaari, 1399; Muslim 1155).

And Allaah knows best.

can one be fasting and be talking to her fiancé over the phone?

Praise be to Allaah.

There are guidelines that have to do with speaking to one’s fiancée, details of which may be found in Question no. 13791.

If these guidelines are met, especially the stipulation that there be no risk of provoking desire and if there is a need to speak to her, then it is permissible. But if any of these guidelines is not met then talking to her becomes something that is not allowed according to sharee’ah. If you talk to her and one of these guidelines is not met whilst you are fasting, this is going to affect your fast. In this case it is worse and a more serious sin, because it is happening at a time of virtue, and because the one who is fasting has to protect his fast from anything that may spoil it or affect it.
