Giving charity in the last ten days of Ramadaan, Using something to remove bad breath during Ramadaan, Is saying Ramadan Mubarak be bidah? Having dental treatment whilst fasting | What is Permitted for a Fasting Person?

Is it better to give in charity in the last ten days of Ramadaan, or to spend the nights of those days in prayer and dhikr which is the only special thing about those nights?

Praise be to Allaah.

What was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) concerning staying up at night during the last ten nights of Ramadaan is that those nights should be spent in prayer and dhikr.

Charity during Ramadaan is better than charity at other times, but we do not know of anything in the Sunnah to indicate that giving charity in the last ten days is better.

But the scholars stated that righteous deeds are better when done at times of virtue, and undoubtedly the last ten nights of Ramadaan are better than any other nights, because Laylat al-Qadr is among them, which is better than a thousand months.

Whatever the case, what is prescribed for the Muslim is to give a great deal of charity throughout Ramadaan. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the most generous of people and he was at his most generous during Ramadaan. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6; Muslim, 2308

And Allaah knows best.

In the pharmacies there is a kind of perfume that is just for the mouth, which comes in the form of an aerosol. Is it permissible to use it during the day in Ramadaan to remove bad breath?

Praise be to Allaah.

Instead of using an aerosol when fasting, it is enough to use the siwaak which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged us to use. If he uses an aerosol and nothing from it reaches his throat, then that is o.k. But it should be noted that the smell that comes from the fasting person’s mouth as a result of the fast is not something to be disliked, because it is the effect of obedience to Allaah. In the hadeeth it says that “the smell from the fasting person’s mouth is better in the sight of Allaah than the fragrance of musk.”

Is saying "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Ramadan Kareem" considered to be bid'ah?

Praise be to Allaah.

There is nothing wrong with congratulating one another at the beginning of the month. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to tell his Companions the good news of the onset of Ramadaan, and urge them to make the most of it. Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘There has come to you Ramadaan, a blessed month. Allaah has made it obligatory on you to fast (this month). During it the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are locked, and the devils are chained up. In it there is a night that is better than a thousand months, and whoever is deprived of its goodness is deprived indeed.’” (Reported by al-Nisaa'i, 4/129; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/490)

Please can you tell me if it is permissable to go to the dentist while fasting. As I have to have some treatment done on my teeth, which is quite important. What is my situation if I was fasting (Ramadan)and something went down my thoat unintentionally.

Praise be to Allaah.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (May Allaah have mercy on him) was asked,

If a person suffers pain in his teeth and he goes to the dentist who cleans them or does a filling or extracts one of his teeth, does that affect his fast? If the dentist gives him an injection to anaesthetize his tooth, does that affect his fast?

He answered:

The things mentioned in this question doe not have any effect on the validity of the fast, rather that is allowed. But he has to be careful not to swallow any medicine or blood. Similarly, the injection mentioned does not affect the validity of the fast because it is not a kind of food or drink, and the basic principle is that his fast is valid. (Ajwabah Muhimmah tata’allaq bi Arkaan al-Islam).

If you can go to the dentist in the evening, this is preferable.

And Allaah knows best.
